SEVEN abandoned vehicles were towed, while eight individuals and two others were issued with compound fines for smoking in prohibited areas and littering in public places respectively, during the ‘Ops Terjah Bersepadu’ operation by the Law Enforcement Unit last Saturday.
Joining in the operation which focussed on the Gadong commercial areas were personnel from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation under the Ministry of Development; Land Transport Department (JPD) under the Ministry of Communications; and Health Enforcement Unit under the Ministry of Health.
During the operation, health enforcement officers caught eight individuals smoking in places prohibited under the Tobacco Order 2005, slapping each with $300 compound fines.
The Law Enforcement Unit of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department nabbed two individuals dumping rubbish in public areas and issued each of them $100 compound fines.
Under Chapter 30, Section 12 of the Minor Offences Act, anyone or company found guilty of disposing rubbish in public places will be handed a compound fine not exceeding $500.
Failing to settle this, the matter will be forwarded to the courts and a further $1,000 fine will be levied against the culprit if he/she/the company is a first-time offender. For subsequent offences, a fine of $3,000 and jail term not exceeding three months will be passed.
Meanwhile under Chapter 30, Section 12 (1) (f) (i) of the Minor Offences Act, it is an offence to leave a vehicle on any road or vacant plot of land without gaining official permission.
The Law Enforcement Unit regularly conducts operations to ensure that the public and businesses comply with the rules and regulations set out under the Minor Offences Act.
