TRAFFIC jams along Jalan Haji Basir during rush hour will soon be eased, as parents dropping off and picking up their children at St Andrew’s school will now be able to park their cars at a spacious new car park next to the school starting next year.
The section of road near the school is a notorious traffic bottleneck during times when classes begin and end, as parents, out of convenience, stop their cars by the roadside to drop off or pick up their children instead of making their way into the school compound.
The brand new car park, next to the school on a 1.83-acre plot of land belonging to His Royal Highness Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim, was confirmed to be officially named the ‘Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim Car Park’ in a press statement released by St Andrew’s School.
The car park will be able to accommodate 157 cars, according to Stephen Ong, Chairman of the Board of Governors of St Andrew’s School, during his speech at the school’s annual Speech and Prize Giving Ceremony 2017 last Sunday morning.
Ong said, “This 1.83-acre site has been generously leased to the school rent-free for a period of five years. I wish to thank the family of His Royal Highness Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim for this gracious and generous gesture. This is a big help to parents and the public, and relieves much of the traffic congestion around the school entrance.”
The car park is a project under the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) under the chairmanship of Dato Jack Ting, and implemented with the support of generous sponsorship from various local businesses.
Parents are advised to drop off their children inside the car park area instead of at the roadside.
The ceremony also included the presentation of merit certificates to students who achieved five A’s in the 2016 Primary School Assessment (PSR) examinations, top performers in the GCE ‘O’ Level examinations in November 2016, and students who received Brilliance Awards from the Ministry of Education in 2016.
Students who had achieved outstanding performa-nces at the Australian National Chemistry Quiz 2017, New South Wales International Competitions 2017, Primary School Math Olympiad 2017, 4th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad 2017 in Singapore, athletic competitions among schools in Cluster 3, and 3rd Brunei Chinese Language Essay Writing Competition, were also honoured.
