HEAVY downpour yesterday afternoon caused flash floods as well as traffic chaos on a number of main roads in the Brunei-Muara District.

Pictures and videos of flash floods were circulated on the social media, with some of the worst affected areas being Jangsak and Madewa.

According to a warning issued by the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department on its Facebook page, heavy thunder showers are expected to persist over many areas of the country, with risks of flood and flash floods especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Wind gusts of up to 40km/h are likely during heavy showers.

The warning was issued between 3.30pm to 6.30pm.

Also affected by the flash floods are residents of the RPN Bukit Beruang, particularly the semi-detached area at Simpang 377.

Speaking to the Weekend Bulletin, a resident, Mohd Fadzillah bin Maisali, explained that the problem is a recurring one.

“Whenever it rains, water filled with soil would flow down from a nearby hill. And when the drains cannot cope, it spills out and causes flash floods,” he said.

The main concern is that the water would flow into manholes and spill over into drain holes, which in turn will flood the inside of houses through the toilets.

Mohd Fadzillah said there were also occurrences of soil erosions behind his house due to heavy rainfalls and that caused drains to be clogged. He appealed to the relevant authority for assistance.
