Peace, stability essential to ensure economic development

NURTURING trained, effective and professional military personnel is important to ensure that the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) is able to maintain its responsibility in safeguarding peace in the country.

This was stated by Permanent Secretary (Policy and Investment) at the Ministry of Finance Dato Paduka Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman as the guest of honour at the Passing Out Parade of the 160th intake of male recruits and the 53rd intake of female recruits yesterday at the Training Institute Royal Brunei Armed Forces (TI RBAF) in Penanjong Garrison.

The parade marked the completion of the recruits’ Basic Military Training (BMT). A total of 163 male recruits and 56 female recruits performed their Passing Out Parade at the event.

In his speech, Dato Paduka Ahmaddin highlighted that His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah during the monarch’s 71st birthday celebration, where His Majesty stated that peace, solidarity and prosperity are the most valuable national assets and that maintaining peace is important for ensuring continued prosperity.

Dato Paduka Ahmaddin hoped that the Ministry of Defence and the RBAF will continue efforts to enhance the level of peace and stability in the country, as they are important factors that contribute to economic development, which will help attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and make the country more competitive and pro-business.

The guest of honour also reiterated the importance of prudent spending including in the acquisition of government assets.

“Every purchase of government assets must be made in accordance with the stipulated regulations and guidelines. This will assist the government, especially in ensuring stable financing and enhancing the financial management by not sidelining ‘value for money’.”

He said this is important not just for the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, but also all the civil services.

“For this, the RBAF and the Ministry of Finance must continue to strengthen cooperation to ensure that all stages of strategic planning and operations are in line with the efforts to realise the Brunei Vision 2035.”

Congratulating the recruits, Dato Paduka Ahmaddin reiterated the importance for them to follow a religious way of life and maintain a virtuous and disciplined personality.

During the ceremony, the guest of honour inspected the parade and presented awards to the instructors and recruits who achieved excellence during the course of the training.

Awards for the 160th intake of male recruits were given to 15737 Sergeant Md Ali bin Haji Ismail for Best Platoon Sergeant; 15566 Lance Corporal Suhardi bin Kurus for Best Male Instructor; 52308 Recruit (L) Md Zulizam bin Shamri for Best Overall Recruit; 52175 Recruit Ahmad Firdaus bin Yusup for Best in Small Arms; 52272 Recruit (U) Awangku Md Izzat bin Pengiran Emran for Best in Physical Training; and 52180 Recruit Awangku Aminor Ariffin bin Penigran Amir Hamzah for Best Military Skills.

The recipients of awards from the 53rd intake of female recruits were 21324 Sergeant Hajah Norhafizah binti Haji Duraman for Best Platoon Sergeant; 21243 Corporal Linda binti Serudin for Best Female Instructor; 21875 Recruit Dayangku Khalisha binti Pengiran Abdul Rahman for Best Overall Recruit; 21870 Recruit Almas Syadwanie binti Kamis for Best in Small Arms; 21885 Recruit (U) Siti Marhayati binti Ahmad for Best in Physical Training; and 21860 Recruit Nurhafizah binti Harun for Best Military Skills.

The event was attended by Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, Commander of the RBAF; services commanders, commandants, senior officers, officers and other ranks of RBAF as well as family members and friends of the recruits.
