Royalty attend ‘Bollywood Unplugged’

THE ‘Bollywood Unplugged by Sugar and Spice, Mumbai’ played out at the Jerudong International School (JIS) Arts Centre, with Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, attending as the guest of honour.

Also present were Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, Chief of Adat Istiadat Negara; Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports; as well as Biravij Suwanpradhes, Ambassador of Thailand to Brunei Darussalam.

In her speech, Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Nagma Mohamed Mallick explained that the show was held to celebrate 25 years of Asean-India Dialogue Partnership, where Brunei was the country coordinator for Asean from 2012 to 2015.

She also highlighted Brunei’s active participation in Asean events in India over the past few months, which included nine young achievers from Brunei attending the Youth Summit India (August 2017); local artist Pengiran Kamarul Zaman’s participation at the Asean-India Artists’ Camp in Udaipur (September 2017); A Band Once performing at the Asean-India Music Festival in New Delhi (October 2017); and the participation of Dr Norhabiba Kamis of the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies, who represented Brunei at the Asean-India Network of think tanks meeting in Jakarta (January 6-7).

The upcoming events will see 23 Brunei students participating in the Asean-India Students Exchange Programme (January 14-23) to five Indian cities; 12-member cultural troupe from Brunei who will perform at the Ramayana and Traditional Dance Festival in New Delhi and two other cities (January 20-24); the Asean-India Business and Investment Meet and Expo in New Delhi (January 22-23); as well as the Asean-India Commemorative Summit on January 25.

With 14 performers, Sugar and Spice is a power pack entertainment group that has enthralled audiences worldwide with their spell binding performances, led by Sugar and Spice Cultural Director Monica Narula. Having specialised in Folk music events, Bollywood nights and star nights, the group brought a combination of all the above with fusion effects of international music in a one-and-a-half hour show.

Besides well-choreographed dances, the event included live singing by professional playback singers from the Indian film cinema and television.
