HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam together with Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam consented to grace the opening night of the musical adaptation of Sir Ben Elton’s highly acclaimed ‘We Will Rock You’, organised by International School Brunei (ISB) yesterday.
On hand to welcome Their Majesties were ISB Board Chairman Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa and Executive Principal Dr Steven Geraghty.
Accompanying Their Majesties was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel.
Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah was involved in the musical as one of the performers.
‘We Will Rock You’ musical is part of ISB’s annual stage production, scored to the music made popular by the hit rock band Queen. The show is based around hits of Queen such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga and Another One Bites The Dust.
The musical tells the story of a distant future where a powerful corporation named Globalsoft has taken over the world, and live, man-made music has been banned entirely.
A group of Bohemians take up the struggle to restore ‘real music’ and with it the free exchange of thought and individuality. With the help of Pop, an ancient hippie librarian who is researching secret musical histories, two soul rebel named Galileo and Scaramouche set about trying to find the key to saving the world – Brian May’s guitar, which is buried in the remains of Wembley Stadium.
Cameron Smith, one of the youngest cast who played Galileo, said that he has always loved performing on stage and this would be his third show in an ISB production. “I have learnt so much from this production,” he said before adding, “Some of the songs are really challenging; ‘Under Pressure’ is one of the hardest, but worth it. I hope you enjoy the show.”
Meanwhile, Dr Steven Geraghty in his welcoming message noted that ISB’s name is synonymous with high quality education in all areas, including performing arts, adding that “the talent and self-confidence of our students testify to this”.
He hopes that the annual production will serve as a platform for students to showcase their talents and creativity.
The ‘We Will Rock You’ musical will continue today starting at 11.30am and the last show will be at 6.45pm. Members of the public who wish to witness the programme can contact ISB for ticket bookings.
