UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru) on collaboration towards providing attachments that will benefit the undergraduates of the university.
The signing ceremony took place at the Lecture Room of the Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT) at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Present as the guest of honour to witness the signing was the Vice- Chancellor of UBD, Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pengiran Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz.
The morning event began with a safety briefing followed by the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat.
The Dean of FIT, Pengiran Dr Mohd Iskandar bin Pengiran Haji Petra, said in his welcoming remark that the signing of the MoU will be used as an avenue to support the engineering programmes, particularly Information Communication Systems Engineering.
He added that during the sophomore year, the faculty seeks the involvement and contribution of industries and looks forward for TelBru to be part of the faculty of educators joining hands together in shaping the future engineering graduates.
“We always aspire to become an excellent engineering education faculty for producing quality systems engineering graduates who have solid core engineering skills along with value added features such as professionalism, entrepreneurial insight, environmental awareness and understanding of the social impacts associated with the use of technologies.
“These graduates will be well-equipped for the real-world jobs in industries. We are confident that the graduates that we produce will always be an asset for our industries and stakeholders. We have benchmarked our students with those with international exposure through their semester-long study abroad programme.”
He added that all of the faculty’s engineering students are very competitive and have always excelled with outstanding grades in their examination.
“For example, two of our students that went to one of the leading institutions in the United States for a semester, despite only being there for less than four months, adapted with the environment and culture very quickly and did very well in their studies. Their interaction with the professors and peers also was very good. I am pleased to share that the students have been nominated to the Dean’s list, a prestigious recognition for the students’ achievement.”
He also mentioned that, “at the programme level we also ensure that our programmes are up to a standard that is recognised internationally. For this, we benchmark ourselves with international accreditation bodies. We are working hard towards accrediting our programme under the prestigious ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) of the US. This work is in good progress.”
“One of the essential components for the process is the participation of industries such as TelBru as advisory members in curriculum development and improvement. FIT always ensures that our existence will be relevant through mutual collaboration and partnership with big industries such as Telekom Brunei Berhad. Insya Allah, we will optimise our mutual partnership to the best interest of both parties.”
David Kay, CEO of TelBru, said that the collaboration reaffirmed TelBru’s commitment to work closely with the university and other institutes of higher learning for the development of education in Brunei Darussalam. He added that TelBru has signed similar MoUs with Politeknik Brunei and the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE).
He emphasised that the MoUs formalise coopertation in the forms of sponsorship of students, sharing teaching resources and offering internships to students of the two institutions.
“We believe educating our young people is a shared responsibility. That is why industry and academia partnership like this is so important to us. It offers a platform for the sharing of ideas and experiences for the betterment of our respective institutions. Strategic partnerships can lead to the generation of new ideas and new knowledge. It is a mutual approach, a win-win situation and we at TelBru are happy and proud to be part of the process,” said Kay.
The MoU was signed by David Kay and Rubiah binti Haji Yacub, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Corporate and Administration), UBD.
Under the MoU, undergraduates from FIT will have the opportunity to maximise their learning experience and apply theory to practice in a real working environment while on attachment with TelBru. The MoU is part of TelBru’s ongoing initiative to support the national human resource development programme and to encourage local graduates to take up employment in the private sector in line with the nation Vision 2035.
Also in attendance during the signing ceremony were the faculty staff, senior management and officials from FIT and TelBru.
