SEVEN auto workshops were issued compound fines for disposing waste material in a public area, which is a violation of Chapter 30 Section 12 of the Minor Offences Act.
Personnel from the Law Enforcement Unit of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department issued the fines following an operation – codenamed ‘Operasi Bersih 58/2018’ – targetting the light industrial area of Anggerek Desa over the weekend.
Two of the workshops were each issued a $500 fine, while the remaining five were each fined $200. Under Chapter 30 Section 12 of the Minor Offences Act, any individual or company found guilty of disposing rubbish in a public place will be handed a compound fine not exceeding $500. Failing to settle this, the matter will be forwarded to the courts and a further $1,000 fine will be levied against the culprit for a first offence. A $3,000 fine and jail term not exceeding three months will be handed for subsequent offences.
The Law Enforcement Unit regularly conducts operations to ensure individuals and businesses comply with the rules and regulations stipulated under the Minor Offences Act.
Members of the public can lodge complaints or report of any company or individual littering in public by contacting 2244151 (extensions 127 or 253).
