THE Secretary-General of Asean Dato Paduka Lim Jock Hoi chaired the 8th Meeting of the Committee of the Whole (CoW) for the Asean Economic Community in Singapore on January 21, where the member states laid out economic priorities for the year and cross-cutting issues.
According to a news item on Asean.org, the Secretary-General’s chairing of the meeting highlights the significance of the CoW as the coordinating platform for the Asean Economic Community (AEC), particularly to discuss annual sectoral priorities and address cross-cutting issues among the AEC sectoral bodies to better promote and deepen Asean economic integration.
The news item goes on to state that the meeting provided Singapore, the Asean Chair of 2018, an opportunity to share the priority deliverables for their Chairmanship year across the three community pillars, highlighting this year’s themes of innovation and resilience.
The meeting further noted and provided feedback on the updates regarding various sectoral annual priorities.
During the meeting, the CoW also had an interface with representative of the Asean Business Advisory Council (Asean-BAC) on the latter’s priorities for 2018.
In addition to the chairs and representatives of the AEC sectoral bodies, the 8th Meeting of the CoW was also participated in by the chair or representative of the Senior Officials’ Meeting of the Asean Socio-Cultural Community (SOCA), the Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM), and Committee of Permanent Representatives to Asean (CPR).
The CoW is held annually at the beginning of each year, and serves as the main platform for cross-sectoral coordination for the AEC.
