AWARDS were presented to winners of the Mitsubishi Asian Children’s Enikki Festa 2017-2018 yesterday at the Songket Ballroom of The Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong.
The competition, organised by the Department of Co-Curriculum Education as the event’s local organiser, saw entries from students from 70 primary schools, including private schools as well as primary schools under the Islamic Studies Department at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Eight students received the Best Entry Award while two selected preschoolers received the Jury’s Special Award. The Excellence Award was given for the best entries from every participating school. Tokens and certificates of appreciation were also handed to all participating schools.
Masaki Fujiwara, the General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation Brunei Liaison Office and guest of honour at the event, presented the awards and tokens.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa followed by a welcoming speech by Haji Mohd Sharifuddin bin Haji Mohd Salleh, the Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education and chairman of the ceremony.
Haji Mohd Sharifuddin said Enikki (meaning illustrated diaries) Festa competition aimed to, among others, provide an opportunity for children around the world to understand the daily lives of Asian people through illustrated diary accounts.
It was also designed to facilitate cultural exchange between the children in Asia and promote understanding of each other’s lives and cultures, to foster an environment where they can work together towards building a better future.
“A total of 182 schools were invited to participate in the competition…in the end we managed to gather the participation of 70 schools,” said the chairman. “By joining this event, the students can improve their own literacy levels and get involved in cultural exchanges with budding artists in different schools and countries.”
In the competition’s preliminary round held on December 4 and 5 last year, 600 entries out of 2,300 qualifying entries were chosen for further screening. From these, 300 were selected to proceed to the next round, and on the final day of evaluation on December 6 last year, the juries selected the final eight best entries out of the 300.
These eight entries, the chairman added, were sent to the competition organiser in Tokyo earlier this month for international screening, which will take place in Tokyo in April to determine the winners of the Grand Prix Award, the Organizer’s Award and the Excellence Awards.
Mitsubishi Asian Children’s Enikki Festa is a competition jointly organised by the Mitsubishi Public Affairs Committee, Asian Pacific Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Association (AFUCA), and the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan.
