THE Minister of Communications, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat, urged members of the public to collect their unclaimed packages or parcels from the Mail Processing Centre, since these pose a liability to the Postal Services Department.

Currently, there are around 500 parcels or packages dating back to 2016, which are yet to be claimed by their owners. Meanwhile, the amount of uncollected parcels and packages for 2017 is still being assessed.

The minister, who presided over the launching of the new mobile application, ‘BRUTRACK V 1.0’ yesterday, also made an unannounced visit to the Mail Processing Centre storage.

The minister told the Bulletin, “There has been a drastic increase of amount of parcel and packages to and from abroad. This is a positive development, through which the Postal Services Department can gain business opportunities.

“Fifty per cent of the parcels and packages require Customs inspection, therefore the Postal Services Department issues advice slip for customers to claim their parcels or packages at the Mail Processing Centre for inspection.

“Currently, there are quite a number of parcels or packages that have yet to be inspected and collected. We would like to seek public assistance for packages or parcels that are still unclaimed.”

He explained, “We do not want to see a backlog that will result in the loss of revenue for the Postal Services Department. The unclaimed items will become a liability for the department, as we need to ask the senders if the items should be shipped back, with the costs incurred by the Postal Services.

“The uncollected items from 2016 are already stored in one location, and awaiting the decision on the next step to be carried out.”

The minister added that the Postal Services Department is mystified, as to why these items remain unclaimed from the Mail Processing Centre. He also revealed that the Postal Services Department is in consultation with the Royal Customs and Excise Department, to introduce improved inspection processing of parcel or packages by using declaration forms.

“If the items are non-taxable, then they are already declared, and do not have to go through inspection,” he said.

Meanwhile, a list of uncollected parcels and packages will be published on the Postal Services Department website today, at http://www.post.gov.bn.
