THE Ministry of Education (MoE) yesterday presented appointment letters to 105 contract teachers under a project to recruit local graduates as English Language and Mathematics tutors.
The new recruits will be placed at primary and secondary schools across the country.
The appointment letters were presented at ceremony to mark the completion of a five-day induction programme held at the Lecture Hall of Raja Isteri Girls High School (STPRI).
Present as the guest of honour and to present the appointment letters was Hajah Zurina binti Haji Harun, Acting Director of Human Resources at the MoE.
Chairman of the ceremony Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Head of Project, Literacy and Numeracy Coaching Programme (LNCP) hoped the five-day induction programme has given the graduates knowledge and information pertaining to the aspiration of the MoE as well as exposure to what their duties and responsibilities as teachers are.
He urged the newly-inducted teachers to continue enhance personal development and consistently strive for greater professionalism in an effort to increase the quality of their teaching, and open themselves to learn from more experienced teachers.
The induction programme was designed to prepare the teachers with the know-how in teaching English Language and Mathematics prior to starting their teaching job at their assigned schools.
The induction programme comprised 11 briefing sessions conducted by various depart-ments including workshops carried out by LNCP on ‘Teaching for Mastery’; Brunei Darussalam Teacher Academy (BDTA) on ‘Use of Data to Close the Gaps’; and the Student Affairs Unit at the Department of Schools on ways to handle students with discipline problems.
During the induction progr-amme, the Council of School Leaders also conducted a workshop titled ‘Growth Mindset’. The programme also included a brainstorming session and several discussions.
The contract teachers, placed at various primary and secondary schools across the country, will be guided by their local coaches who will become their mentors and school leaders.
They will also undergo professional development progr-ammes carried out by the school, cluster, LNCP and BDTA aimed to enhance teaching quality either in terms of pedagogy or curriculum content.
Meanwhile, the contract teachers will be monitored and evaluated continuously by the school and the Ministry of Education to ensure that their teaching and learning quality achieves at least Level 3 in the Brunei Teacher Standard – Teacher Performance Appraisal (BTS-TPA). The project aims to recruit 200 local contract teachers – 100 each for English Language and Mathematics. Implemented under the LNCP, it is a long-term initiative of the MoE to recruit more local graduates as English and Mathematics teachers.
In an interview, Naiyirah binti Haji Tahamit, a contract teacher appointed to teach at Ahmad Tajuddin Primary School in Kuala Belait, said the five-day induction course helped her immensely in learning how to teach in a classroom.
She hoped that with the help and guidance from school leaders, local coaches and experienced teachers, the new teachers can contribute to creating a culture of excellence in schools and nurturing lifelong love for learning among the students.
“Insya Allah, we will try our best to work hard and learn to become high quality teachers of English Language and Mathematics.
“We are off to a good start here in Brunei. But we must leave this hall not walking, but running. We owe that to the children, parents, and the community of today and tomorrow. We have no time to waste. We are keeping the fire burning.”
