LOCAL photographer Murni bin Haji Mahali was named winner of the Brunei Photographic Society’s (BPS) 2017 ‘Best Photographer of the Year’ competition after his entries won the hearts of judges.
The announcement was made during the society’s 36th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Silaturahim Hall of the Youth Centre in the capital yesterday, during which Murni also received the Fellowship Brunei Photographic Society (FBPS) award.
Present to officiate the AGM was Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali.
The deputy permanent secretary noted in his speech that with BPS marking its golden jubilee this year, he is confident that the society has identified all the challenges in the field of photography and hopes that through the AGM the society will be able to stay apace and up-to-date with current developments.
This, he added, includes upgrading cooperation with government agencies and any relevant parties as well as further expanding the society’s role and grabing opportunities by using the existing platform.
He called on society members to stay close-knit and continue sharing experience and expertise between themselves to contribute towards the nation’s development, particularly in the wider creative and tourism industry.
He also expressed hope that the society through photography will take initiatives to collect and produce images of cultural, life and historical significance in the country so that they can be used as reference material for future generations.
BPS President Haji Hamidun bin Md Noor, meanwhile, in his welcoming remarks, noted that 2018 is a historical and special year for the society, as it will be celebrating its golden jubilee.
“BPS joined the Federation of Asian Photographic Arts (FAPA) in 1976, the Federation International De L’Art Photographique (FIAP) the following year, and in 1994 the society joined the Photographic Society of America (PSA),” Haji Hamidun said.
The society through its Exhibition Section has also successfully hosted several exhibitions and attended photography related events overseas.
Yesterday’s AGM is a bi-annual activity of the society – a follow-up event marking the end of term for its appointed executive committee members for the year 2016-2017 – during which voting for the new president for the year 2018-2019 and the presentation of tokens of appreciation to term 2016-2017 executive committee members took place.
