A TOTAL of 10 participants from the first series of the Open Water Survival Awareness programme received certificates of completion during the programme’s second series session at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College yesterday.
The guest of honour, Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Maiddin bin Pengiran Haji Said, Director of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) and Acting Director of Fire and Rescue presented the certificates. Delivering a briefing on the second series of the Open Water Survival Awareness programme was Awangku Mohd Ali Rahman bin Pengiran Haji Salleh, a public relations officer from the Fire and Rescue Department.
Awangku Mohd Ali Rahman shared that according to statistics from 2014 to 2018, 10 deaths due to drowning were recorded, while up to date for 2018, two cases of drowning have been reported.
“From 2014 to January 2018, 33 per cent of the total number of drowning cases occurred at riverine areas, while 67 per cent happened at coastal areas,” he said.
“As for the age groups involved in the drownings, 50 per cent of victims were between zero to 20 years, 25 per cent were between 21 and 40 years, and 25 per cent aged between 41 and 60 years.”
Also delivering a briefing during the event was Beach Bunch President Rizan bin Latif.
