THE Mukim Telisai choir group took the top spot of the Inter-Mukims Patriotic Songs Choir Competition accumulating 175 points overall. In second place was Gong 3ML choir group from Mukim Lamunin, receiving nine points less, and Indah Cahaya from Mukim Ukong the second runner-up with 153 points.
Mukim Telisai walked away with a grand prize of $1,500. Gong 3ML won the $1,300 prize and Indah Cahaya brought home the $1,000 prize. In fourth place, Maya Jauqah, received the consolation prize of $500.
The competition, organised by the Information Department of Information under the Appreciating the Hoisting of the National Flag Programme, in conjunction with the 34th National Day Celebration, took place at the Tutong District Civic Complex’s Seri Kenangan Hall yesterday.
In attendance as the guest of honour was Legislative Council member YB Pehin Orang Kaya Putera Maharaja Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Ghani bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Dewa Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Rahim.
Head of Tutong Branch of the Information Department, Hasanul Hidayat bin Haji Abu Bakar in his welcoming remarks noted that the competition was aimed to instil patriotic spirit and raise the spirit of love to the monarch, nation and country.
These choir groups will also be able to perform in any national events hosted by the Information Department or mukim and village consultative councils, as well as other ministries and government departments.
The competition, which also aimed at strengthening ties, inculcate cooperation and unity amongst the participants, was also hoped to bring more talent forward in various fields such as singing, acting, dancing and hosting.
The singing of the national anthem was the curtain raiser at yesterday’s event, followed with the choir performances by the participants comprising four groups, Mukim Telisai, Gong 3ML, Indah Cahaya and Maya Jauqah of Mukim Tanjong Maya choir groups.
Winner Mukim Telisai performed the patriotic song ‘Merdeka Brunei Darussalam’, Gong 3ML and Indah Cahaya both sang ‘Tekad Kemerdekaan’ while Maya Jauqah performed the ‘Purih Bangsa’.
Yesterday’s event also saw a performance by Gemilang Choir Group, who sang ‘Daulat Gemilang Darussalam’, followed with a video presentation entitled ‘Kibarkanlah Dengan Megah Bendera Negara’.
A similar competition was held at the Information Department in Old Airport, Berakas for Brunei-Muara District, while Belait District will hold the competition tomorrow at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School, Lumut, while Temburong District will hold its competition on February 10 at the Bangar Community Complex’s Belalong Hall.
