SPKS for athletes, associations

THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) yesterday hosted a Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme (SPKS) ceremony for 66 athletes and 10 national associations involved in various international sporting events.

Attending the ceremony at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar.

On hand to welcome the royal entourage was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, who later presented the SPKS to the recipients.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Haji Nuurmatiin bin Haji Abu Bakar, a Religious Officer at the MCYS.

This was followed by a welcoming speech by Permanent Secretary at the MCYS Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, who said the involvement of the royal family members in the 29th SEA Games showed their continuing concern and commitment to the development of sports in Brunei.

“The active involvement of the royal family has given a further boost to the athletes’ spirits in standing together for the development of sport, while realising the national aspiration of elevating athletic achievements and sporting excellence, in line with the goals of Brunei Vision 2035,” she said.

Among the members of the royal family involved in the 29th SEA Games was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen as a member of the Brunei Polo Team.

Also involved in the 29th SEA Games were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah as the Manager of the Brunei Polo Team; and Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar as team members.

Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah was Manager of the Brunei Netball Team, which won a bronze medal during the 29th SEA Games.

Leading the recipients of the SPKS were Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar from the Brunei Polo Team, which won a bronze medal in the 29th SEA Games.

This was followed with a presentation of the SPKS to other athletes who collected medals at the 29th SEA Games, the 9th Asean Para Games, 8th Golden Break 9-Ball Championship in Kuala Lumpur last year, the 6th International Wushu Championship Pars Cup in Iran, the 79th Singapore Open Track & Field Championship in Singapore, and the 9th Asian Junior Wushu Championship in Korea.

At the same time, the sporting associations of Polo, Wushu, Pencak Silat, Lawn Bowling, Netball, Sepak Takraw and Karate for the 29th SEA Games were awarded a total of $75,550.

The sporting associations of Athletics, Tenpin Bowling and Cycling received a total of $67,77 for the 9th Asean Para Games; Wushu received $10,500 for the 6th  International Wushu Championship Pars Cup; Athletics received $4,000 for the 79th  Singapore Open Track & Field Championship; Cue Sports received $1,400 for the 8th Golden Break 9-Ball Championship; and Wushu was awarded $12,325 for the 9th Asian Junior Wushu Championship.

Twenty coaches were also presented with the SPKS for their active contributions to sports in Brunei.
