THE ‘EMERGE 5: Folklore’ art exhibition was launched at the Creative Space Art Gallery and Studio, Sengkurong yesterday.
The 10-week exhibition, which concludes May 31, features a collection of 14 artworks and striking installation from 10 local artists showcasing their talents in retelling the stories of Jong Batu, Kemala Stone, Nakhoda Ragam and Puteri Lela Menchanai as well at the Chinese hero, Ong Sum Ping.
The exhibition, organised by Creative Space Art Gallery and Studio, emphasises the enrichment, conservation and recording of the local art culture by providing a physical and online platform for Brunei’s young emerging artists.
Curated by Haji Khairul Anuar and Amalina binti Abu Bakar, the exhibition features local talents including Hariz Khalid, Amalina AB, Faizal Hamdan, Hairol Khalid, Aisyah, Amal Masle, MadNycer, Khairul Ibrahim and Wan Mayang.
The Creative Space Art Gallery will host workshops such as Lino Printing Workshops by Osveanne Osman, Manager of Creative Space Studio and drawing classes by Amalia AB, a participating artist.
According to Osveanne, the art exhibition is an interactive platform to culturally explore and enrich the local culture heritage while appreciating the value of art.
Faizal Hamdan produced a ‘conceptual piece’ while Hariz Khalid explored more into the concept of folklore and how it has assimilated into society.
“Folklore is not necessarily about storytelling, it is about how stories affect us in modern life as well,” said Osveanne.
She admitted that research plays a big part in the exhibition and information is scarce. Osveanne attributed Haji Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yunos, published books surrounding mysticism for being part of the artist’s ‘main reference’ and invited the author see his words come to life at the art exhibition.
The project has made significant growth in its latest installment and gained support from Progresif, local production house Otter Co Muizs Ali and Printmartz. The studio looks forward to collaborate with other local talents and hold events aimed at creating awareness in the local art community which may foster and contribute to the local economy in the lucrative creative industry. The art exhibition is open from 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday.
