RELIGIOUS Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), through its Faculty of Education, organised the National Health Science Education Symposium 2018 in conjunction with World Health Day 2018.
The symposium was officiated by the guest of honour Haji Abdul Manap bin Othman, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday at the university’s Tarbiyah Hall.
“The National Health Science Education Symposium 2018 with the theme ‘Bergerak Sihat Bersama Islam’ is part of the proactive initiatives of KUPU SB which is to bring awareness of the importance of health that can be seen in various perspectives, particularly Islamic perspective,” the permanent secretary said during the official launching of the symposium.
“Maintaining health is one of the Maqasid al-Syariah which should be focussed on and one of the main objectives of Islamic law is to keep the benefits of humanity, so Muslims are obliged to take care of five main components, namely religion, identity, mind, lineage and wealth.
“The Ministry of Health (MoH) has taken proactive measures in providing awareness on the importance of healthcare as well as preventive measures,” he said, adding that the prime objective of the MoH is to provide quality services to customers and stakeholders and it also strives to create comprehensive, integrated and cost-effective healthcare services in the country.
“Through the vision ‘Towards a Healthy Nation’, the ministry has outlined three key strategies – inculcating the idea that health is everyone’s business; preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases (NCDs); and delivering excellence through consolidation and re-alignment of healthcare services,” he said.
He explained that activities to improve health and fitness of the people have been conducted by the government, such as the Bandarku Ceria initiative.
“In achieving the Brunei Vision 2035, the health sector also has to play a key role by formulating various appropriate strategies that can make Brunei Darussalam a globally renowned nation of well-educated, highly skilled and dynamic people and thereby to help the Sultanate to be among the top 10 countries in terms of per capita income by 2035,” he added.
Earlier in his welcoming remarks, Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Zahiri bin Awang Mat said that the symposium aimed to raise awareness among the community on the importance of practising a healthy lifestyle and at the same time to provide understanding that Islam also prioritises health of an individual and the surroundings.
The symposium was based on the theory and practice of integration between science and Islam and saw health science lectures by experts and health screening sessions. In addition, Islamic treatment and healthcare methods were shared to participants.
Four speakers – Dr Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar, Acting Ra’es of KUPU SB; Associate Professor Dr Rosediani binti Muhammad, Senior Lecturer and Family Medicine Specialist, Medical Science Studies Centre, Universiti Sains Malaysia; Dr Thahiratul Asma’ binti Zakaria, Environmental Health Unit, Ministry of Health in Malaysia; and Dr Hajah Nurhayati binti Haji Md Kassim, Senior Medical Officer and Head of Health Promotion Centre – delivered lectures.
The symposium also saw a main presentation session by Associate Professor Dr Rosediani on ‘Family Health Education from the Perspective of Islam’.
Underscoring the importance of health in Islam, she touched on four good health components – spiritual, physical, psychological and social.
She urged that every family should have a health plan and manage family health by practising healthy lifestyles, undergoing regular health screening and maintaining emotional health of the members.
“Family health management is important in Islam as it helps to ensure the well-being and harmony of the family as well as prevent divorces that occur due to health problems,” she added.
A second presentation on ‘Aspects of Health Education in Islam’ was delivered by the Acting Ra’es of KUPU SB, followed by other presentations in the afternoon session.
The event also saw a health screening exhibition conducted by the MoH and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital, a blood donation drive by Jerudong Park Medical Centre and an Islamic Health Exhibition by Darusysyifa’ warrafahah.
