BIRD hobbyists flocked to Tutong District yesterday, for the annual oriental songbird contest organised by Pekicau Solo Brunei, in collaboration with AREMA Indonesia.
Held at the open space in front of the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah (PMMPMHAMB) Hospital, the event featured 167 contestants participating in six different categories, according to the types of birds on show.
In the categories of Murai Batu Kepala Hitam (MBKH), Murai Batu Kepala Putih (MBKP) and Murai Kampung (MK), each of the first-place winners was awarded cash prizes of $500.
The second-place winners for the same categories received $300, while those in third place won $150.
In the categories of Suit Mata Putih (SUIT MP), Kenari and Lovebird, each of the champions got to take home $200, while the first and second runners-up received $100 and $50, respectively.
The main highlight was the pronouncement of overall best birds, which went to Shamsuddin bin Haji Jainuddin, Gigih Gianto bin Ponidi and Muhammad Amalulariffin bin Azmi.
Prizes were presented to the winners by Haji Azmi bin Haji Abdul Rahim, the Chairman of the Tutong Municipal Board.
Mohammad Noorasikin, the event chairman, told the Bulletin that this year’s participation was unexpectedly larger than that of the previous contest held at Bukit Udal, Tutong.
“I hope more will turn up next year, especially oriental songbird hobbyists,” he said.
