THE ASEAN Engineering Inspectorate – Electrical Inspection (AEI-EI) Roadshow took place yesterday, focussing on electrical installation standards in buildings in ASEAN member countries.
Held at the Headquarters of the Public Works Department (JKR), the event was co-organised by the ASEAN Engineers Register and PUJA Academy Sdn Bhd, and saw the attendance of 137 people.
The proceedings saw two talks, beginning with a presentation by Ir Yau Chau Fong, the Chair of the AEI-EI Steering Committee at the AFEO level, who also plays an extensively active role in the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM).
He discussed a feasibility study on electrical installation standards in buildings in ASEAN member countries, conducted in 2017 in light of the aspiration and commitment under the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint 2025 to enhance participation in global value chains by harmonising with international standards and supporting standards compliance capacity building.
The feasibility study is an initiative of the ASEAN Engineers Register Committee – ASEAN Engineering Inspectorate for Electrical Installation in buildings carried out and championed by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) Energy Working Group, which is led by the Electrical Engineering Technical Division of the IEM.
The study has two milestones to be achieved, in line with the objectives of the formation of AFEO itself.
They are: to promote goodwill and mutual understanding; and to establish and develop an ASEAN baseline standard for engineering profession with the objective of facilitating the mobility of the engineers within the member countries.
The second presentation was delivered by Ir Lim Kim Ten, a Professional Engineer (Electrical) BEM and Corporate Member of IEM who is actively involved in Malaysian low voltage electrical standard developments.
He provided an overview on electrical installations of buildings, particularly with regards to requirements for medical locations.
Entitled ‘Overview of BS 7671 – 7 – 710: Electrical Installations of Buildings – Part 7-710: Requirements for special installations or locations – Medical locations’, the presentation noted that low voltage electrical installations for healthcare facilities are among the most complex. The overview discussed and highlighted the design of electrical installations for hospitals based on BS7671 – 7 – 710:2008 with rules of standards and documents.
