CARDIOLOGISTS from Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital and Gleneagles JPMC jointly organised the Annual Electrocardiography (ECG) Workshop for medical health professionals at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas over the weekend.
Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals from across the four districts attended the half-day workshop.
The workshop aimed to share the knowledge of ECG reading. This would improve their ECG diagnostic skills and translate to faster and better management of patients with heart disease. In particular, the most crucial are the speedy diagnosis and management of patients with heart attacks, Brunei Cardiac Society President Dr Sofian bin Dato Paduka Dr Haji Johar emphasised.
“These patients, if diagnosed early and fast tracked to receive definitive advance medical therapy such as thrombolysis or primary coronary intervention, can receive lifesaving procedures. Not only that, if treated early, it can reduce morbidity and improve the long term prognosis of the patient. This in turn would maintain the health of the individual patient and they would still be able to continue to contribute to the economy of the country.
“Many of the patients with heart disease are at the prime of their lives and if they were to be left debilitated from cardiac disease, it would be a loss to the country,” he said.
“Over a decade of organising this ECG workshop, we have focussed on the interpretation of basic ECG skills. This year, we have taken a step forward and added the interpretation of the advance ECG skills.
“The advance ECG session included interactive sessions for more complex ischemic syndromes, advance arrhythmias and pacemaker related conditions,” he continued.
The electrical rhythm of the heart is detected using wires attached to the chest of the patient, these are recorded as squiggles of lines on graph papers and are called ECG.
The ECG gives a wealth of information about the heart and allows the doctor to diagnose heart conditions and implement appropriate treatment.
The event was supported by Brunei Cardiac Society, BruMedic Enterprise, Jumanji Tuition School and AztraZeneca.
