A REGIONAL training programme on Authentic Teaching, Learning and Assessment was officially launched with an opening ceremony at the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Regional Centre for Vocational and Technical Education and Training (Voctech) yesterday.

The programme, which sees the involvement of 18 participants from 10 SEAMEO member countries, is the fourth and last Regional Training Programme of SEAMEO Voctech for the 2017/2018 fiscal year under the focus area of Teaching, Learning and Assessment.

Taking place from April 30 to May 11, the programme focusses on the use of Problem-Based Learning and Project-Oriented-Problem-Based Learning (POPBL), and aims to build the capacity of participants to integrate authentic assessment.

Centre Director of SEAMEO Voctech Dr Haji Mohd Zamri bin Haji Sabli in his speech at the event explained that the programme expects participants to be able to facilitate students in acquiring 21st Century skills, specifically in developing their critical thinking and creative skills, improving problem-solving skills, increasing motivation and helping them to learn to transfer knowledge to new situations.

He shared that participants will have the opportunity to visit educational institutions that will implement authentic teaching, learning and assessment strategies. In addition, another important component of the training programme is for the participants to prepare action plans applying the use of PBL and/or POPBL relevant to the subjects taught in respective institutions.

The centre director expressed his hope that participants would become enriched with a better understanding of contemporary issues in technical and vocational education and training. He then added that he was confident the participants would be able to make valuable contributions to teaching and learning at the institutions in their respective countries.

“To the participants, I wish all to have a fruitful and memorable training here at the Regional Centre of SEAMEO Voctech and be able to use the knowledge gained during this training programme at your respective institutions in your respective countries,” he said.
