THE Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) yesterday announced that it is empowered to investigate under Section 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 131 any public officer who maintains a standard of living above or is in control of pecuniary resources or property which is disproportionate to his or her past or present emolument.
Anti-Corruption Bureau Chief Special Investigator Awangku Haji Sabarin bin Pengiran Haji Mohamad also noted in the Bureau’s statement to the public that in any case involving public officers who have committed offences under any written laws such as criminal breach of trust, abuse of power, cheating, forgery of documents and other related offences, the Bureau has the power to investigate under sections 12A, 12B and Section 19 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 131.
Apart from the fine imposed by the court, the proceeds of the crime disclosed and recovered from the investigations conducted by the Bureau shall be seized and forfeited under the provisions provided by the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 131, Criminal Asset Recovery Order (CARO), 2012 and any other written laws, the statement underlined.
The Bureau also reminded that no public officer is exempted from investigations of the Bureau regardless of position or rank. Investigations of the Bureau are conducted with trust, responsibility and fairness, the statement added. The Bureau urged all public officers, including government officials and personnel, to abide by the existing laws and regulations enforced in Brunei Darussalam.
