THE Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DPPMB) held its 4th World Café 2018 forum yesterday.
Themed ‘Accomplishing the National Vision’, the forum was held at the Design & Technology Building in Anggerek Desa.
Dr Haji Kamaruddin bin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, the President of the DPPMB explained in his opening remarks that the forum is held to explore ways on how the public and private sector can better contribute to accomplishing Vision 2035.
The forum began with a session on ‘The State of the Brunei Economy’, which kicked off with a presentation entitled ‘Vision 2035 and Brunei Darussalam’s Economy’.
The first part of the presentation focussed on Vision 2035, and was delivered by Nadzri bin Haji Yahya, Director and Special Duties Officer, Sekretariat Tetap Wawasan Brunei 2035, Prime Minister’s Office, while Haji Asrul Adrain bin Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Ahmad, Deputy Director-General, Department of Economic Planning and Development, Prime Minister’s Office delivered the second part of the presentation on Brunei Darussalam’s economy.
The next speaker was Muhammad Firdaus bin Haji Abdul Kadir, Manager, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Promotion Unit, Brunei Economic Development Board. His presentation touched on how FDIs impact Brunei business, and how local business development and private public partnership play a role.
This was followed by a presentation entitled ‘Unemployment and Social Security’, which was delivered by Haji Shariful Bahri bin Haji Sawas, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Labour, Ministry of Home Affairs. He shared some of the initiatives from the department on tackling the issue of unemployment.
The final presentation for this session came from Haji Ibrahim bin Haji Md Ali, BN Hartajati Management Consultant, that discussed the progress of previous DPPMB World Cafés.
All the speakers then took part in a panel discussion that was moderated by Awangku Muhd Hazwan bin Pengiran Haji Kamarulzaman.
The second session of the forum was entitled ‘Perspectives from the Industry Experts’, and began with a speech by Caterina Ventura, the High Commissioner of Canada to Brunei Darussalam.
She spoke on the importance of public private partnership in the development of a nation, sharing examples from Canada.
This was followed by a presentation by Iftida Yasar, Founder and First Chair of the Indonesian Outsourcing Association (ABADI). Her presentation highlighted that outsourcing is always relevant to support sustainability on global supply chain.
The next speaker was Lim Hong Huai, the High Commissioner of Singapore to Brunei Darussalam. In his speech, he spoke on Singapore’s FDI journey and its impact on business and social environment.
The final speaker of the session was Haslina binti Haji Mohd Taib, the CEO of BAG Networks. Her presentation focussed on why the digital economy is important for the private sector.
Following the presentations, all the speakers took to the stage for a panel discussion moderated by Allen Ang.
Following the forum, which took place in the morning, a special roundtable discussion was held in the afternoon among selected stakeholders to deliberate key points raised during the morning event.
