PEKAN Bangar is now accessible by foot with the newly-established Bangar Heritage Trail where tourists can breezily explore the wonders and the unique cuisine offered in Temburong District, the Green Jewel of Brunei.

The Bangar Heritage Trail and the latest Temburong Holiday Destination Package were launched by Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, at a ceremony held at Bumiputera Complex, Pekan Bangar, yesterday.

Also present at the ceremony were members of the Legislative Council, foreign dignitaries, permanent secretary and deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, members of the Brunei Tourism Board, Temburong District Officer, penghulus and village heads.

The minister together with the guests made a walk-about using the heritage trail and was impressed with the places visited.

Some of the highlights of the heritage trail include the Bumiputera Main Complex where local products made by the village consultative councils are showcased. The trail also accommodates several shops and restaurants to help improve the economy of the Temburong District.

The trail will also bring visitors to a monument located just outside the Bangar jetty which is built as a tribute to the government officers who gave up their lives protecting Pekan Bangar in 1962.

Another highlight is Tamu Muhibah Aneka Rasa Bangar where one can find the famous local delicacies such as ‘kuih wajid’ and ‘udang galah’.

During the heritage walking trail, the minister along with the foreign dignitaries watched a colourful mural painted under the Pekan Bangar bridge and visited the Temburong Art and Culture Heritage Gallery which depicts wildlife such as the Proboscis Monkey, Hornbill and fauna such as the Sumboi-Sumboi (pitcher plant) and the Bunga Simpur.

The showcases were made possible by the collective efforts of teachers and students of Sultan Hassan Secondary School and local artists from Collective Arts Events.

Beyond the walking trail in Bangar, there is also a jungle trekking activity for those avid hikers to Bukit Patoi in Peradayan Forest Reserve.

There are also bird watching packages added to the programme where visitors can discover over 100 different species of birds in Ulu Temburong National Park.

The minister commented that these are just a few of the new products on offer, adding that there are plenty more potential for improvement. “We want to provide more options for tourism stakeholders to include these activities into the Temburong tour programmes,” he noted.
