BRUNEI LNG Sdn Bhd (Brunei LNG) held its 16th annual Academic Excellence Awards ceremony at the Liang Lumut Recreational Club (LLRC), Sungai Liang, Belait District yesterday morning.

The ceremony, co-hosted by Sungai Tali Primary School and Sungai Tali Religious School, served to acknowledge the achievements of students in the Belait District, particularly in their examinations.

In addition, the ceremony also aimed to motivate students to continue study hard and diligently, and highlight the efforts of the teachers in support of their students.

The guest of honour, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, was welcomed by Headmaster of Sungai Tali Primary School, and chairman of the ceremony, Cikgu Mohammad bin Haji Suhaili.

Also present were a member of the Legislative Council and Penghulu of Mukim Liang, YB Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin; Brunei LNG Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Patrice Girard; Human Resource Manager and Public Relations for Brunei LNG Rafidah binti Rambli; and Brunei LNG officers and staff members.

“Today’s ceremony represents BLNG’s continuous efforts in their focus to develop and improve the quality of education in Brunei Darussalam,” said Cikgu Mohammad in his opening speech.

He noted that more than 160 students from the Belait District had gathered at the ceremony to receive their awards, and have their achievements acknowledged, which will serve as a motivational platform.

“The ceremony comprises four categories, which includes Academic Excellence Award for students in primary and religious schools based in the Mukim Liang area; and students who sat their public examinations, which included the Primary School Assessment (PSR), Religious Education Primary Schools Certificate (SSSRU) examination, Brunei Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examination, and Brunei Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level examination,” he explained.

He added that the ceremony, through the appreciation award for best teachers, also highlighted the efforts of 14 teachers from schools in the district.

“It is hoped that this ceremony will not only help to develop the academic abilities of the youths, but enable them to prepare for their future,” he said.

This sentiment was reflected by Dr Haji Azman, who noted that the proof of Brunei LNG’s efforts can be seen over the course of the 16 years that the ceremony was conducted.

“I encourage schools across the country to take full advantage of chances such as this to help inspire and motivate students to strive for higher academic achievements, thorough the initiatives of other agencies and organisations,” he said.

The ceremony proceeded with the guest of honour and Rafidah presenting the awards to the students in each of the categories, as well as the 14 teachers.

The ceremony concluded with Patrice Girard presenting the Prestigious School Achievement award for primary, secondary and religious schools to Belait Arabic School, Chung Hua Middle School Kuala Belait, and Sungai Liang Religious School respectively.

Students of Sungai Tali Primary School conducted a pantomime performance.
