THE Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) successfully defended their Women Netball Invitational Championship title on the occasion of 66 years of the establishment of the Information Department Tournament with a 9-7 win over Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium, Police Headquarters yesterday.
Having tasted their first title triumph in last year’s final over Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MoFAT), MS PDB survived the challenge by their worthy final opponents this year to ensure a successful defence of the crown at their own turf.
MS PDB was in the driving seat after leading 5-2 in the first half but NCB made a valiant attempt to come back with a series of attacks.
However, MS PDB were more clinical in shooting with a 100 per cent conversion rate.
“Ahead of the tournament, we trained for three times a week. During training, we encouraged all the players to participate and we actually played against all the teams here,” said team manager Dayangku Norazriani binti Pengiran Haji Anuar in an interview with the media.
“We have had friendly matches with most of the teams. We are very familiar with all of them,” she said.
Asked about the strength of the other teams, she said, “They are all very competitive. It was quite a tight game for us in the final, so I’m very happy that we became champions.”
After joining an invitational tournament, MS PDB will be looking forward to similar competitions and the National Sports Festival (PSK).
“We will maintain the team and we will probably recruit more players. We will probably start training after Ramadhan,” the head coach said.
Meanwhile, Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) secured third place by edging Radio Television Brunei (RTB) 11-10 after both sides locked at 7-7 in normal time.
Divided into two groups, seven teams took part in the tournament including Government Printing Department, Department of Electrical Services and hosts Information Department.
Guest of honour Legislative Council member YB Siti Rozaimeriyanty binti Dato Seri Laila Jasa Haji Abdul Rahman, presented the prizes.
