BRUNEI Council on Social Welfare (MKM) recently opened its office to underprivileged individuals and families to choose hundreds of clothes donated by its members and the public during the course of its charity used clothing drive.

The charity drive was carried out throughout a one-month period until May 13 and underprivileged individuals registered and verified with the council were invited to make their choices from the donated clothing.

MKM President Mohd Yusof bin Halim said that the response to the donation drive was overwhelming and expressed his appreciation for the generosity of the public and the hard work by its members. “It had always been our practice to allow the needy to choose their own clothing rather than having clothing given to them. This would ensure that the clothing would fit them.”

The clothing distribution continued until the first day of the fasting month and as part of its philanthropic goal to help ease the burden of the needy, various other charity events have been organised by MKM, including the distribution of cooked food for breaking the fast to 500 needy people each day from the second until the 11th day of the fasting month.

MKM members prepared the traditional dish bubur lambuk for collection at its office while the rest will be delivered to the homes of needy families. The project was incepted in 2016 and since then, many members of the public had come forward to donate raw food materials and cash to make the project a resounding success.

MKM Deputy President 1 Hajah Johana binti Haji Jaya said Ramadhan has always been a very busy month for MKM. “Following the food distribution, we will have a Khatam Al-Quran ceremony on June 8 and on June 9 with a breaking of fast event with about 200 needy people and thereafter we will be starting our preparation for our ‘Sejambak Kasih’ programme where Hari Raya goodies will be given to another group of about 200 needy families. the distribution will be done in the last week of Ramadhan,” she added.
