COME rain or shine, Kassim bin Haji Lamat rummages through the garbage collection point daily in search of tin cans and scrap metal to be sold for recycling.
Currently residing at the Kampong Kasat dumping area, the former army officer relies on collecting recycled material to supplement his earnings, on top of receiving assistance from villagers.
Kassim lives in a tent, collecting rain water and bottled water for his daily use. He suffers from swellings in both knees, yet continues to rummage to raise enough to cover his daily expenses.
“I have been living here for the past two month ever since the house I lived in at Kampong Kalamasi was burnt. Due to estrangement with my former wife, I am unable to live with my children, and so I decided to live on my own,” Kassim told the Bulletin.
The Community Development Department (JAPEM), Brunei Darussalam Ex-Army Association and other associations are looking into the matter.
