A PAINTING by local artist Ng Hui Fong was presented to Singapore’s President Halimah Yacob on Monday night as a token of appreciation by Sian Chay Medical Institution during the launch of the To’ Puan Dr Tsao Sui Lan Memorial Endowment Fund at Hotel Fort Canning in Singapore.
The artwork, a portrait of President Halimah Yacob and her husband Mohamed bin Abdullah Alhabshee standing over the background of an HDB flat, was presented to the Singapore President – who is also patron of the Sian Chay Medical Institution – by Sian Chay Medical Institution President Dato Seri Dr Toh Soon Huat.
Ng, who was present to witness the To’ Puan Dr Tsao Sui Lan Memorial Endowment Fund launch and to meet the President, said, “I am feeling extremely honoured and humbled. I am so thankful for this opportunity and to be present at such a meaningful philanthropic event.”
The artist, who completed the painting within 10 days, explained the reason for incorporating the HDB flat in the background.
“I understand that the HDB flat is very close to the heart of President Halimah Yacob,” she said.
On meeting the President in person, she noted, “I was very nervous. It was a great pleasure to meet the Singapore President in person.”
The SGD$20 million memorial endowment will go towards assisting individuals in hardship and welfare cases – comprised largely of those who have fallen through the social safety net – referred by Singapore grassroots advisers during their weekly meet-the-people sessions to the Sian Chay Medical Institution.
