THE Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) is redoubling its efforts to assist those in need during the holy of Ramadhan, both in Brunei and overseas.

On the home front, MKM is distributing Sungkai meals for 10 days to 550 families registered with MKM. The meals are bought from a local restaurant with the funds raised for MKM’s ‘Sungkaian Ramadhan Project’.

Haji Hasbollah bin Haji Damit, MKM Deputy President II and Head of MKM’s Religious Bureau, said, “We identified the ones in need from among those registered with us. Some came to collect the meals from our office and have been reimbursed of their petrol expenses, while we arranged for volunteers to distribute the rest.”

Many youth volunteers assisted in the distribution of the meals, including those employed in the public and private sectors.

Khairul Anwar bin Haji Ghafur, who works in the private sector, said, “I am helping to send food to four families. It is very satisfying work to bring joy to these families, as well as a very humbling experience for me.”

Stella Wong, who is employed with a law firm and sending cooked meals to two families, said, “As a non-Muslim, l appreciate Ramadhan more now. I realise that Ramadhan is not just about abstaining from food and drink, but also about doing charity work.”

Apart from contributing Sungkai meals, MKM will also provide Iftar meals for 200 other families in early June.

In the last week of Ramadhan, the organisation will conduct its ‘Sejambak Kasih Project’, during which 200 destitute families will receive Hari Raya gifts.

At the same time, MKM is providing Iftar meals on a daily basis to 1,100 elderly Rohingya refugees at the Unchiprang Refugee Camp in Bangladesh, with the assistance of the Bangladeshi army.

In addition, MKM is collaborating with a non-profit charity, Gifting Humanity, to establish a school and orphanage at the same refugee camp.

The school has 593 students, with 120 orphans among them. MKM is tasked with providing Iftar meals for the school’s 83 Tahfiz students and their teachers.

Mohd Yusof Halim, MKM President, said, “We cannot thank our donors enough for making it possible to conduct all these Ramadhan programmes, both in Brunei and at the refugee camp.”

MKM is reliant on donations to conduct its projects, and can be reached at 7146680.
