THE Hari Raya celebration is something to look forward to for 3,103 orphans from the Brunei-Muara District, who received cash donations in a presentation ceremony yesterday, at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas.
The orphans are registered with the Community Development Department (JAPEM), which raised BND90,803 for the National Orphans Fund this year, through its SMS Brunei Prihatin campaign.
The donations were presented by Minister of Finance II and Chairman of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) Board of Directors Dato Seri Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, together with his spouse, Pengiran Datin Hajah Noor Yashimah binti Pengiran Anak Haji Hashim.
The orphans also received their donations from the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin; his spouse, Datin Nurhayana Janis binti Abdullah Lim; and the Brunei-Muara District Officer Misle bin Haji Abdul Karim.
During the ceremony, 21 orphans received Outstanding Student Encouragement Scheme Awards from BIBD for their excellent results in the 2017 Primary School Assessment (PSR); the GCE ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level examinations; the Brunei Religious Education Higher Certificate (STPUB) examinations; and the Brunei Religious Education Certificate (SPUB) examinations.
The PSR students received cash voucher of BND500 each, while the GCE ‘O’ Level and SPB top achievers received cash voucher of BND800 each.
Those with excellent scores for their GCE ‘A’ Level and STPUB exams were presented with cash voucher worth BND1,000 each.
Meanwhile, 785 orphans from the Tutong District, 734 from the Belait District and 218 from the Temburong District, will receive their share of the donations in separate presentation ceremonies at their localities.
The SMS Brunei Prihatin campaign has been organised on an annual basis by JAPEM, Radio Television Brunei (RTB), DST Communications Sdn Bhd and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd since 2005, with overwhelming response from the public.
Also in attendance were members of the Legislative Council; the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; the Acting Director of JAPEM; the Managing Director of BIBD; government senior officials; senior officials from BIBD and DST; and mukim penghulus and village heads.
