BRUNEI Darussalam has received an invitation to participate in the World Class Training Workshop for Para Sport Coaches, hosted by the Nippon Sports Science University (NSSU), Japan, which will be held next month in Tokyo, Japan.
Acting Director of Youth Development Haji Rosmadee bin Haji Mohd Daud yesterday informed this at an agreement signing for the participation of two local coaches – Haji Wahid bin Ismail and Azmize bin Abdul Rahman. The signing took place at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).
Earlier, delegates from NSSU Japan paid a courtesy call to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin.
Their discussions focussed on conducting joint sports science coaching workshops to prepare national para athletes for regional and international sporting events as well as upgrading para sports in the country.
Present at the meeting between NSSU and the Paralympic Council of Brunei Darussalam (PCBD) to discuss the Movement Towards Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020 were Professor Masamitsu Ito and Tomohiro Kanemoto from NSSU, Shaikh Mahmud bin Shaikh Haji Ibrahim and Md Zain bin Haji Muhammad from PCBD, the nominated coaches, para athletes and MCYS officials.
The acting director, speaking in his capacity as PCBD President, added that what makes it even more special is that this initiative is part of the coaching journey for the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020.
He expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan, NSSU and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for their trust in PCBD to join the coaching workshop, the sponsorship for the airfare and accommodation.
The two Brunei coaches will join 14 other participants from Africa, Oceania, America and Asia.
The PCBD coaches will gain valuable knowledge on coaching techniques not only for Paralympic athletes, but also for other sports where they can apply their skills. This will ensure Brunei is ready for the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020.
“I believe today is just one of the first few steps in a long journey towards building the capacity and capability of our coaches in the country while encouraging cross-border partnerships,” he said.
With the minutes of the meeting inked, it is hoped that it will not only strengthen collaboration between PCBD and NSSU, but also help identify current challenges, and yield recommendations in realising the ability to participate in the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020.
The coaching workshop is set to run from July 13-15 at the NSSU Setagaya Campus, Tokyo.
