Gifted students head to Asean Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey

SIX gifted students and two education officers yesterday departed to the Philippines to represent Brunei Darussalam at the 5th Asean Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey (APTJSO) themed ‘Climate Change and the Rainforest’. It is set to run from June 12-18.

The selected students are divided into two teams.

Team A is represented by Muhamad Haziq Zikry bin Mohammad Ariff and Teo Siang Jun from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) and Noor Imanina binti Haji Ahmad Nizam from Jerudong International School (JIS), while Team B is represented by Adibah Syahmina binti Mohammad Amin from MSPSBS; Khairul Ikhwan bin Abdul Rahman from Katok Secondary School and Muhammad Adiib bin Haji Ismail from International School Brunei (ISB) for the poster presentation and the Lab Skill Assessment.

The delegation is accompanied by Norhidanajibah binti Tompal, officer from Special Education Unit (SEU) as the head of delegation, and Nor’ Azali binti Dato Paduka Haji Jumat from Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College.

For the poster presentation, Team A will be presenting on ‘Resiliency of Tropical Rainforests to Rising CO2 levels’ and Team B will focus on ‘The Role of Rainforests in Rainfall Patterns’.

The APTJSO is an annual competition that targets gifted students aged between 13 to 15 years from the APT region to compete in the demonstration of Biology, Chemistry and Physics laboratory skills, collaborate with other students from other member countries in a mixed-nation group project presentation and also in a country-based group poster presentation competition.

APTJSO provides opportunities for students to share ideas and experiences while developing their ability to conduct research and cultivate creativity in the field of Science and Technology.
