THE Brunei National Road Safety Council (BNRSC) held a road safety campaign at Petani Mall, Tutong yesterday to highlight the importance of road safety measures, such as buckling up while on the road and ensuring that their car tyres are in good condition.

Among those present during the campaign was Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Iswandy bin Ahmad. Also present were Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and BNRSC Secretary Dr Haji Supry bin Haji Awang Ladi and Chairman of the Brunei Insurance and Takaful Association (BITA) and BNRSC Ambassador Haji Osman bin Haji Md Jair.

During the event, Yang Berhormat Iswandy urged the public to always be mindful of their own safety and that of the fellow road users, always fasten seatbelts and ensure that car tyres are in good condition, even if they are only taking their vehicles out for a short drive.

One of the notable exhibits at the event was a crash simulator ride, which gave visitors the mock sensation of crashing in a moving vehicle.

“It’s an interesting sensation while sitting in the simulator. For example, when I rode it the ‘speed’ was set at 15 km/h, and the ride came to a sudden halt, simulating a crash. Wearing the safety belt really secured me from being thrown away, and it really showed me how important the safety device is,” said a visitor who tried the simulator.

Yang Berhormat Iswandy said from operations conducted by the traffic police and observations and information gathered from the public, it was found that there are still quite a significant number of drivers and passengers reluctant to fasten their seatbelts.

“From January till August 24, five people lost their lives in road accidents – all were found to have not fastened their seatbelts. I should make it known that not fastening your seatbelts can cause serious head injuries during an accident, even resulting in you being thrown out of the car, causing severe damage or fatality,” Yang Berhormat Iswandy warned.

He added that in 2017, the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) recorded 1,373 cases of car users not fastening their seatbelts. This year alone up till the end of July, 400 drivers were found guilty of not wearing their seatbelts and were issued with compound fines.

“We must urge and stress all drivers and passengers alike to fasten their seatbelts, even though they are just going for a short drive, as anything could happen. Follow the speed limit as well, and don’t use your mobile phones while driving, and also don’t drive when under the influence of alcohol,” Yang Berhormat Iswandy said. Adding on to Yang Berhormat Iswandy’s advices was Haji Osman who said, “It is certainly very important for people to ensure their car tyres are in good condition. It is their responsibility as road users to ensure this for their own safety and for the safety of other road users.”

He added, “We can see that according to statistics issued by the BNRSC, there were three cases of road fatalities this year caused by unsafe vehicle conditions such as worn-out tyres.

“Driving with such tyres at high speed in slippery road conditions such as during heavy downpour or over water puddles on the road can cause accidents. It is imperative that members of the public are aware of their car tyres’ lifespan and ensure that their car wheels are properly aligned.”
