WITH the support of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE), the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) will be adopting the 21st Century Learning Design Rubric and Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge Framework following the findings of the latest employers’ satisfaction survey that showed IBTE’s students lack 21st Century skills, a trend that is not unique to Brunei Darussalam only.
The latest move to further improve the development of IBTE instructors, which will benefit the students, was revealed by Dr Chin Wei Keh, Director of IBTE, during his speech at the certificate presentation ceremony for participants of the Technology Enriched Instruction (TEI) for 21st Century Skills Development at the Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) workshop held at the Lecture Theatre, School of Aviation, IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus.
“IBTE recognised that the continuous professional development of our teaching staff is paramount for us to achieve quality teaching and learning for our students,” he added. “The management is committed to provide the necessary support to ensure that the right initiative is in place for the professional development of our staff.”
Some of the past initiatives embarked by IBTE include staff attachment which aimed for personnel to gain industry exposure, in house competency based assessment training, participate in leadership and team building programmes and strengthen personal as well as organisational growth.
“We took the initiative to revise our curriculum last year and the TEI professional development workshop comes at a right time as the new framework will provide the support for our teaching staff to design learning activities to allow students to develop 21st Century skills,” said Dr Chin.
The four-day workshop was organised by the SHBIE of Universiti Brunei Darussalam which aimed to raise the participants’ understanding of the technologies that can be used to positively impact teaching and learning as well as an introduction to emerging teaching and learning technologies.
A total of 144 IBTE instructors from various programmes have successfully completed the workshop.
