HANA Farhana @ Nur Shuhada’ binti Haji Md Som was yesterday awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Medal for achieving overall excellent performance based on her academic and co-curriculum achievements, community service contributions and leadership skill.
The graduate received the recognition at the University Medal and Book Prize and Excellence Awards ceremony, in conjunction with Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) 30th Convocation. The event was held at the UBD Chancellors Hall.
Medals, book prizes and excellence awards were given to 79 students, five of whom received the coveted University Silver Medal award. The silver medallists are Benjamin Jr Gerard Carvalho, Cristina Castro Lo, Muhamad Adib bin Haji Ibrahim, Ahmad Khairul Anwar bin Hashim and Chung Ming Fang.
Nine Master’s Degree students and 68 Bachelor’s Degree programme students were awarded the University Book Prize for their outstanding performance.
Minister of Education and guest of honour Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman handed out the medals and book prize awards.
UBD Vice Chancellor Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Awang Abdul Aziz said, “On behalf of UBD, congratulations to the graduates and students for their achievements. I hope each recipient of the medal and book prize will continue to excel in the fields you venture into.”
To achieve work excellence, she reminded students to continue to raise their knowledge and adapt to be competitive and relevant.
Speaking to the Sunday Bulletin, Hana Farhana said, “I didn’t expect to be awarded such recognition. I feel honoured and proud to be able to represent myself as a UBD student to help in developing the local community.”
Over the three years while studying at UBD, the graduates have been involved in the Bina Ukhwah project, which helps underprivileged families through capacity development or monetary assistance to start up businesses. The project also focusses on helping senior citizens to narrow the generation gap with the youth.
Advising UBD undergraduates to get involved in volunteerism, she said, “It is our time to give back to the country by helping the community because we are one nation.”
