THE PEMEDAYAN (Malay Kedayan Association) Women’s Bureau held a Kedayan Cuisine event at the Community Hall of Mukim Sengkurong yesterday showcasing the traditional way of cooking and dishes exclusive to the ethnic group of Kedayan.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin and spouse Datin Nurhayana Janis binti Abdullah Lim attended the event.
Pemedayan President Haji Zainal Abidin bin Tinggal delivered a welcoming speech followed by a speech by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports who later officiated the opening of the event.
The event showcased diverse Kedayan dishes and their traditional methods of cooking used in the old days when there weren’t as many amenities as today.
One of the highlights was the ambuyat-making competition, a time-tested way of making the sago-based dish.
Prior to that, the minister and spouse tried their hands at an ambuyat-making session much to the delight of the crowds.
The minister also toured the stalls at the event displaying kitchen equipment used by the Kedayans in the old days and tried out a few of the traditional Kedayan food and dishes.
The event concluded with a lunch infused with delicious Kedayan dishes.
