A LOCAL man Sudiman bin Mat Yassin, arrested for the production, usage and possession of counterfeit currency notes, will receive his punishment on October 20 by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrates Court.
The suspect, 37, was found to be in possession of counterfeits of BND2,810 and counterfeits of RM790 during a search conducted by the Commercial Crime Investigation Section of the Criminal Investigation Department under the Royal Brunei Police Force.
He was brought to the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrates Court where he confessed to the three counts of charges under the Penal Code Chapter 22.
The charges are under Section 489A for producing counterfeit monies or banknotes which carries a punishment of 10 years imprisonment and liable to a fine, and Section 489 B for using counterfeit monies or banknotes which carries a punishment of up to 15 years imprisonment and a fine.
Sudiman is also charged under Section 489 C for possessing counterfeit monies or banknotes and could face 10 years of imprisonment and a fine.
This was disclosed yesterday in a press conference by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rina Sufina binti Haji Ibrahim, who is Acting Head of Commercial Crime Investigation Section of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Counterfeit banknotes comprising denominations of BND500, BND100, BND50, BND20 and BND10 as well as denominations of RM10 and RM50 from the case were exhibited.
Acting Director of Criminal Investigation Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Hassan bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Awang Ahmad, highlighted, “The Royal Brunei Police Force managed to apprehend the suspect on August 29, and with the help of the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) in investigations, Sudiman was charged in court.”
ACP Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Hassan advised the public to be cautious when dealing with the transaction of banknotes.
