A MYRIAD of local and multi-ethnic culinary delicacies native to the Tutong District are on display at Karnival Lakanon Tutong (Tutong Food Carnival), which was opened on Friday at the Tutong riverfront night market area.

The carnival will come to a close today.

The event, organised by the Tutong Municipal Department and Tutong District Office in collaboration with the Tutong District Tourism Promotion and Coordination Body, is aimed at promoting food indigenous to the Tutong community, and it also features cooking demonstrations and competitions as well as a food bazaar.

The event was officially launched on Friday by Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong.

Also present during the launching ceremony were Tutong District Officer Haji Shamsul Bahrin bin Haji Mohammad Hussain; Chairman of the Tutong Municipal Board Haji Azmi bin Haji Abdul Rahim as well as Legislative Council members Yang Berhormat Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit, Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Wahab bin Apong and Yang Berhormat Haji Umarali bin Esung.

Accompanying the minister were permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The minister in his speech praised the event as a meaningful initiative to help enliven the commercial atmosphere at the Tutong night market area, also stating his hope that the event can help contribute towards commercial development in the district, especially the Pekan Tutong area, and spur socio-economic activities among the local community.

“We all understand that Tutong is home to some unique food such as pulut panggang, soto, rojak and others. Some of these delicacies can be found beyond the Tutong District, but those produced in Tutong have their own unique taste. We need to preserve this,” the minister said. The minister added that he hopes that the carnival will encourage more similar events to be organised in the future to promote Pekan Tutong and the district as a tourist destination.

“We acknowledge the collaborative work between the public and private sector in organising such an activity, and the involvement of youth in showcasing their creativity and innovation in promoting the district’s products,” the minister added.
