FOUR underprivileged families in the Brunei-Muara District received contributions and gifts yesterday, following a charity tour organised by the Community Development Department (JAPEM).
Leading the tour was Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The recipients had been selected by JAPEM out of several families in Kampong Kuala Lurah, Kampong Junjongan, RPN Kampong Lambak Kanan and Kampong Batu Marang.
“During the holy month of Ramadhan, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, through JAPEM, is stepping up our community-based and outreach activities and thus increasing our efforts to ensure that the welfare of underprivileged families and other members of society who are in need, are being focused on,” said the minister.
“As one of the core government agencies in providing a social safety net for vulnerable people in Brunei, I am encouraging JAPEM to reinforce its networking and partnership with other government and non-government agencies, including looking at alternative and more sustainable ways to help such families,” he added.
Accompanying the minister was Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin and Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, the Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The charity tour is an annual activity for JAPEM, where donations are presented to the elderly, orphaned children, people with special needs, and lower-income families, in time for the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations.
