ORPHANS often wish to be raised by parents or guardians just like any other children who still have both their parents, even when they receive continuous external support.
This was said by the Belait District Officer Haji Haris bin Othman during an interview at the Donation Presentation Ceremony for Belait District Orphans 1437H/2016 at the Pusat Insani in Seria while commending the charitable sponsors, including non-government organisations who have contributed in the month of Ramadhan.
The Belait District Officer was the guest of honour at the event and distributed donations on behalf of the National Orphans Fund and Belait District Orphans Fund.
Around $128,040 of monetary contributions were distributed to 776 registered orphans from the Belait District.
From the total amount, National Orphans Fund and Belait District Orphans Fund contributed $38,800 each, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam contributed $27,160 while Suasana Mentari Engineering Services Sdn Bhd and SMES Matco Sdn Bhd collaboratively donated $23,280 to the orphans, which was presented by Yusof bin Haji Othman the Managing Director for both companies.
Also at the event, various organisations also presented donations which amounted to $6433.87 received by the Belait District Officer.
Amongst them are $1,495.87 from the Mukim Liang Consultative Council, $1,000 from Asia Enterprise, $1,138 from Chiam Engineering Construction, $1,500 from Zentech Sdn Bhd, $300 from Rotary Club of Belait District and $500 each from Korean Register (B) Sdn Bhd and QET Sdn Bhd.
During the interview with the Belait District Officer, he said that the demeanor of orphans can be different from other children, which is why they should be raised as normally as possible while also calling for more NGOs’ support in helping the families.
“We can see from their emotions, interactions, thinking and behaviour that they (orphans) are obviously different, thus the need for the same attention that would be given to other children who have complete families,” added the Belait District Officer.
The Belait District Officer urges family members to register orphans who are not yet registered under the Community Development Department (JAPEM) as soon as possible.
Present to also enliven the event were the Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Lumut 1, YB Awang Haji Mohd Shafiee bin Ahmad; heads of mukims and villages of the Belait District; heads of government departments and divisions based in the district; managers of private companies and the donors who have donated to the Belait District Orphans Fund.
