SOME 5,000 people gathered at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital yesterday morning to participate in the cycling and running event held in conjunction with the 28th Teacher’s Day celebration.
Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the guest of honour, officiated the cycling segment (consisting of an 11.5km route through the capital). The 5km Fun Run, meanwhile, was officiated by Deputy Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, vice-chancellors of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Universiti Teknologi Brunei, rector of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries, directors, principals, senior officials, deputy principals, staff and teachers under the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), and students.
Organised by the Co-Curriculum Education Department of the MoE, the cycling and running event is part of sports activities organised to enliven the country’s Teacher’s Day celebration. The event aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle among the community and to complement the Bandarku Ceria and ‘Car Free Day’ initiatives, while at the same time foster closer ties among the staff under the MoE and MoRA.
The event also saw finalists of the MoE’s Celik Biz and Bigstart competitions setting up booths to promote and sell their products.
