High Commissioner of India holds yoga session

TO CELEBRATE the second International Day of Yoga, some 80 yoga enthusiasts gathered at the residence of the High Commissioner of India for an hour yoga session led by Yoga Guru, Brahmand Tichkule.

Participating in the celebration was Nagma Mohamed Mallick, the High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam, who practices yoga to compliment her other fitness routines.

June 21 was declared the ‘International Day of Yoga’ by the United Nations General Assembly on December 1, 2014. The first International Day of Yoga was organised on June 21, 2015 where millions of people in India and across the globe celebrated.

When asked on the benefits of yoga, Mallick said, “It helps increase the flexibility of my body. I run and go to gym to build fitness in different parts of my body and yoga, which also possesses elements of aerobic exercise, contributes to the flexibility of the body and helps to prevent against non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases.”

“The major gift of yoga is the mental focus and mental calm of the mind. It helps make students study better. For those who are working, yoga helps you focus on the task at hand while in managing relationships, yoga can help put things into perspective,” she added.

She also said that yoga although originating from India, is believed to be for everyone as anyone from all walks of life can benefit from it, regardless of age and beliefs.

When asked on the popularity of yoga in Brunei, the Indian High Commissioner said, “There are lots of yoga practitioners in Brunei especially in the Brunei-Muara and Belait districts and I found out that there are many yoga instructors who are hosting mini yoga sessions for their students.”

Mallick also revealed that a business delegation from India is coming to Brunei either in late August or early September, where the delegation of 15 individuals, are looking to cooperate in the fields of healthcare, pharmaceuticals, alternative energy and others. The visit is hoped to promote investment and bilateral ties between both nations.
