BRUNEI media representatives from Borneo Bulletin, Media Permata and Hua Daily recently took part in a shopping challenge organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The challenge, which was held in Bangkok, was organised in conjunction with the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Sale 2016’.

Fourteen teams of shopping-loving celebrities and media representatives from all over Asia and Australia compete for the 100,000 Baht grand prize, where participants have to race around Bangkok’s most famous malls to find special products in 90 minutes.

Teams were given a budget of 10,000 Baht, a list of goods and free-range to bargain for the items listed in the malls of Bangkok’s famous Ratchaprasong District.

The winner of the challenge was a Chinese team and presenting the prizes was TAT’s Executive Director of Tourism Investment Department, Wiboon Nimitrwanich. Brunei’s team placed 12th in the challenge.

“The shopping challenge is a great way to kick-off Thailand’s grand sale as it showcases the huge range of products out there as well as some of the bargains people can pick up just in the Ratchaprasong District alone. We hope this year’s teams enjoyed the event and may the best bargaining team win,” Nimitrwanich said in a speech before the challenge’s flag-off.

This year’s event was participated by teams made up of members of the media and celebrities from Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Korea, China, Cambodia, Laos, Taiwan, Brunei, Japan and for the first time Australia. Last year’s challenge was won by the team from India – Niharika Keerthi and Vidya Kishore Kumar – who clinched the top spot after an exciting and closely fought race.

The first challenge in 2009 was won by Malaysia. The Amazing Thailand Grand Sale itself has also grown massively since its inauguration back in 1999 and is now the biggest event of its kind in the kingdom with 15,000 shops in 110 malls and shopping centres taking part and offering discounts of between five to 80 per cent on goods as well as other fun and money-saving promotions.
