BRUNEI Darussalam recorded less than 110 cases or incidences of breast cancer from 2013 to 2016.

The majority of the cases occurred in women aged between 40 to 60 years; however, there have been recent cases of women in their 20s who were diagnosed with breast cancer.

This was highlighted by Head of the Health Promotion Centre Dr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim, in her capacity as Co-Advisor to the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 2018, which commenced yesterday at the Theatre Hall of the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE).

The guest of honour at the event was member of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari.

Held with the support of The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) and the Breast Cancer Support Group, the campaign is aimed at providing more awareness and in-depth knowledge on breast cancer, including preventive measures, for both working women and students.

The highlight of the event was a forum titled, ‘Breast Cancer? Facts That You Need To Know!’ featuring specialists from the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital – Amalinda binti Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi and Dr Haji Muhammad Syafiq bin Abdullah; and President of the Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group Hajah Aminah binti Haji Momin.

Apart from expert advice, the attendees also heard the personal story of a woman who survived breast cancer, as well as a tutorial on Breast Self-Examination (BSE).

Various programmes and activities will be conducted throughout the campaign, which will run until March 2019.
