HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday paid his last respects to the late Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Mohd Daud, who passed away at 7.45pm on October 24, at his residence in Kampong Serusop, Berakas.
Also present to pay his last respects was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.
His Majesty and His Royal Highness joined other congregants in the Sunnat Jenazah prayer, led by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned.
The deceased was later laid to rest at the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Muslim cemetery.
The late Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ali, 82, was born in Kampong Ujong Tanjong in Kampong Ayer, on February 25, 1936. His early education began at Pekan Brunei Malay School and later at the Batu Lintang Training Centre in Kuching, Sarawak.
He also furthered his education at the Pekan Brunei English School and the Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College in the capital, before pursuing law studies at Birmingham University in the United Kingdom.
The late Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ali also underwent a course in the Foreign Service Programme at the Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford University.
He served the government as a clerk in 1958, and was later promoted to various posts including assistant legal adviser, deputy public prosecutor; first class referee; acting chief registrar; senior administrative officer, immigration and national registration controller; and assistant to Pehin Orang Kaya Datu Patinggi Maha Kornia Diraja Dato Seri Utama Sir Dennis White in London.
The late Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ali was also the former deputy head of Diplomatic Services Department; acting director of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB); advisor to ACB; and a senior officer at the Office of Private and Confidential Secretary to His Majesty.
He was also formerly permanent secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs; deputy minister of Culture, Youth and Sports; and deputy minister of Foreign Affairs.
The late Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ali was also a member of the Islamic Religious Council; a former executive director of Islamic Bank of Brunei Bhd (IBB); former director of Takaful IBB Berhad; and former Director of IBB Transport Sdn Bhd. He was active in the Scouts association and formerly the President of the Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association.
