THE National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) held a mini carnival in conjunction with ASEAN Day on Disaster Management (ADDM) 2018 at the Student Centre of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday.
NDMC Director and Acting Director of Fire and Rescue Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Maiddin bin Pengiran Haji Said, the guest of honour, officiated the event.
Senior government officers, students and representatives of other stakeholder agencies from the government and private sectors were also present.
The ADDM is annually commemorated by ASEAN member countries on October 13 with different themes each year, with the celebration aiming to create public awareness on the importance of taking disaster risk reduction initiatives in everyday life.
The theme for this year’s event, ‘Strengthening Public Private Partnership’, places emphasis on the importance of collaboration between the government and related stakeholders, including the private sector, in managing and mitigating disaster risk.
The carnival featured a Public Private Partnership (PPP) exhibition featuring several organisations from the government and private sectors such as the Fire and Rescue Department, Syarikat Takaful Brunei Darussalam Sdn Bhd, Insurans lslam TAIB Holdings Sdn Bhd, Emergency Medical Ambulance Services (EMAS), CAE MPTC, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society, WeCare, Brumedic Enterprise, BT Forwarding Sdn Bhd, Daikyo Industrial Gas Sdn Bhd, AES Engineering Sdn Bhd, Say Cookies, SCG Café Lok Lok, KopiRoti.BN, and Red Bull Brunei.
Several activities on the Sulawesi earthquake/tsunami disaster were also organised as part of the exhibition such as a public awareness survey, donation drive, games and quizzes, and a feature of the NDMC’s Safety Guide app.
Other activities included an insurance talk titled ‘Importance of Takaful Protection’ explaining the importance of Takaful protection in helping people deal with unforeseen misfortunes or catastrophic calamities, either through compensations or claims.
The participating exhibitors also promoted their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives based on a disaster management perspective during the event.
