MOBILE Dream Centre (MDC) training commenced its first session at the iCentre in Kampong Anggerek Desa yesterday.

The training – conducted by the Dream Catcher Team – had its opening ceremony for the workshop, which will be conducted weekly until December 2.

The workshop looks to help economically challenged families from specific villages, with the first session focussing on those from the Subok area.

MDC is the grant recipient under the 2nd Youth Against Poverty (YAP) workshop organised by the Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT) last year.

The YAP workshop is a community outreach training programme aimed at young leaders, in stimulating interest and knowledge around the issue of poverty in Brunei. It also provides participants an opportunity to execute their own projects to alleviate poverty in Brunei.

The project vision for MDC is to empower the economically challenged to become independent, and its mission is to enhance their skills. This project hopes to support these families by unearthing their skills and talents. It is hoped these families will eventually go on to break out of the poverty cycle and live a sustainable life, dependent on their own income.

In this session, mothers will be taught how to weave baskets.

MDC has collaborated with BenchLab and engaged Siti Nur Halifah binti Haji Ma’at, a trainer under BenchLab, who has been selling her woven baskets for a decade.

Mobile Dream Centre Project Manager Majdurano Georgiana binti Majallah Sain hopes these mothers will not stop here, and that this workshop will ignite their passion to continue to work hard and strive to bring themselves out of poverty.

“I hope the training will help equip the mothers with the skills that will assist them in starting a business that will make them live a sustainable lifestyle,” Majdurano Georgiana binti Majallah Sain explained in talking about the project goals.

One participant said she hopes not only to generate an income, but also to gain significant knowledge on how to make and sell bags.

“I hope the skills I acquire will help me obtain a side income to help with my everyday expenses,” said another participant.

The team consists of seven members from the 2nd YAP workshop: Majdurano Georgiana, Masura Riang, Bibi Marcella binti Kula, Rezelena Lijar, Syauqie Satia, Wajdi Kifli and Izzuddin Sabaruddin.

The training is supported by SCOT and La Vida, and sees collaboration with BenchLab.
