HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday consented to receive several pesambah (gifts) from various associations, companies and individuals, during the Junjung Ziarah (get-together) ceremony in conjunction with His Majesty’s 70th birthday at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital.
The Tiong Hwa community presented the ‘Golden Peach’ pesembah to His Majesty.
Symbolising longevity, prosperity and wealth, it is a tradition to present such items to the ruler of the country by the Chinese community, explained Foo Liong Yu, the community’s Assistant Secretary.
The community also presented a yellow and orange cake with peaches décor embodying the concept of longevity, wealth and happiness to His Majesty. A special musical performance by 70 Year 1 to Year 4 students from Chung Hwa Middle School was also held at the event.
Representatives from national carrier Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) presented a pesambah in the form of a special issue of the in-flight Muhibah magazine and a photo of His Majesty’s flight with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with Brunei’s first female airline captain, Sharifah Czarena Surainy binti Syed Hashim, as well as Senior First Officers Dayangku Nadiah binti Pengiran Khashiem and Sariana binti Nordin during His Majesty’s recent visit to the Brunei International Airport.
While at the Brunei Association of Banks tent, His Majesty was presented with an oil painting by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Baiduri Bank in his capacity as the Chairman of Brunei Association of Banks, Pierre Imhof.
DST also participated in the get-together session, presenting His Majesty with a white and gold cake with detailed fusion of decor embodying DST’s brand identity through its hexagon shape, as well as the traditional ‘air muleh’ border in appreciation of Brunei’s identity, as a pesambah.
Leading DST to wish His Majesty was Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Hussain, CEO of DST along with DST senior management and staff. Live music performances by DST’s talented in-house band were also held during the event.
Meanwhile, SSEAYP International Brunei presented a plaque as well as a birthday cake shaped as the SSEAYP (Southeast Asian Youth Programme) ship.
On behalf of the art competition committee in conjunction with His Majesty’s 70th birthday, an oil painting painted by Haji Dayang bin Haji Mutalip titled ‘His Majesty and the Youth of Brunei Darussalam’, was presented to His Majesty. The artist explained that he was proud to be chosen for the second time to present the pesambah to His Majesty.
Borneo Bulletin’s photographer, Dean Kassim, also presented a personal gift to the benevolent ruler in the form of a candid photograph taken during a recent charity polo match.
The 30×46 inch tall framed photo portrays His Majesty, wearing full polo gear, galloping on a horse during the Richard Mille Gold Cup Final in conjunction with the charity polo tournament for the Yayasan Children’s Cancer Foundation (YASKA) that was held at the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club in Jerudong.
